Hi,
I recently purchased an SMC EtherPower PCI board, with a DEC 20140
chip in it. I am currently running Linux 1.3.43 kernel using the de4x5
driver, which *seems* to work okay. I could not make 1.3.45 because of
compile errors with the included tulip and de4x5 drivers, something
dealing with "multicast_list" if I remember correctly. I tried the
tulip 0.07a and 0.10 drivers available on cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov for the
1.3.43 kernel but could not get those to compile due to a definition
conflict for "init_etherdev". Apparently the prototype (and the
subsequent calls) for init_etherdev in the tulip 0.07a and 0.10
drivers contain an extra parameter that doesn't exist in the routine
in net_init.c. So, my questions are:
1) Is anyone working on updating the de4x5 and tulip drivers that
are included with the kernel so that they will actually compile ?
2) Is Donald Becker (or whoever) planning on updating the 0.07a and
0.10 drivers so that they are compatible with the later 1.3.??
kernels?
3) Is there a performance difference between the de4x5 and the tulip
drivers? if so, which is better for use in a machine used as a
DNS, httpd, e-mail, and file server ?
