Well I just fixed it! I was using my old kernel with that new slackware
installation because it had GUS support but it seems they changed the
PPP code in the kernel. And BTW the pppd that came with slackware didn't
work with my old kernel either; I was running my old pppd which was
the latest a few weeks ago. Anyhow stock slackware 3.0.0 runs pppd fine
and I just got 5.4 kbytes/sec on an ascii FTP transfer. Yeeeee-haw!
And the kernel said at bootup that it was ppp version 0.2.7; I don't know
exactly what version of pppd it is. So now I get to recompile another
kernel with both the right ppp and GUS support. Sorry to bug y'all.
