I found out how to do it in the newest NET-2-HOWTO.. i had to get a patch 
for the kernel called ip-alias, and had to get a new set of net-tools 
that uses the new kernel code.. after all is said and done now all I have 
to do is type

ifconfig eth0 alias <alias.ip> 

and it works great... thanks for all the responses
