Hear Yea!!!!!
Hear Yea!!!!!
I hearby announce the first meeting of HUMBUG, the Home Unix Machine,
Brisbane User Group. All people who use any variety of Unix at home or
elsewhere are welcome to attend. Among those intending to be at the
meeting are users of Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Minix, Mach, and the Hurd.
It has been decided that membership of HUMBUG will be $15/year. With
this money we intend to make a library of Unix CDs available for hire to
the club members as well as organise functions and print a News letter.
Some people have discussed the possibility of having a CD made by HUMBUG
sold in the Brisbane area. This CD would contain the source code to a huge
number of programs copyrighted under the Gnu Public License.
At the first meeting we intend to elect officials, and do some other
official stuff before we get down to the fun Unix stuff.
The format of the meetings hasn't been set yet, and i imagine will evolve
as we discover what the club members like the most. We intend to have
talks on various aspects of Unix at the meetings, as well as a question and
answer session. People with computer problems will find many people wishing
to show off their Unix know-how to solve the problems I'm sure.
I am hoping that the club will introduce new people to Unix.
So why have a Unix club in Brisbane i hear you ask? Well over the last
couple of years the number of people using Unix at home has increased
dramatically. A user group allows people with similiar interrests to get
together. The club members can help each other, avoiding a large amount of
duplicated effort.
HUMBUG has its own email list now. email humbug-request@azhad.elec.uq.oz.au
with a subject of subscribe to join the list. Email the same address with
a subject line of help for more details. Email sent to
humbug@azhad.elec.uq.oz.au will reach all the subscribers.
During the meeting we will have Internet access via a proxy router.
Here are the details of the first meeting:
Where: The Tea room of the Prentice Centre, at The University of
Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. See below for detailed
instructions as to how to get there.
Date: Friday the 8th of September, 1995.
Time: 6:30-10:30pm. The room will be available to setup machines from 6pm.
How to get there
----------------
Prentice Centre is situated on the St Lucia campus of The University of
Queensland. After 6:30pm parking in 'permit zones' is allowed for cars not
holding a University of Queensland parking permit. 'Park and Pay' is
available also.
To reach Prentice Centre after entering St Lucia drive along Sir Fred
Schonell Drive until you come to a roundabout. Turn right into Coleridge St.
Follow this road until you get to another roundabout. Then take Upland Rd,
turning left into Sir Willam MacGregor Drive. Turn left into College Rd,
then left into Cooper Rd, and finally into Mansfield Rd. Prentice Centre
is then the last building on the right as you drive up the road.
Proceed to the main entrance of Prentice Centre (where the public
terminals are situated). Go to the elevator near the main entrance. Go
to the 4th floor. After leaving the lift turn left, and left again. The
tea room is situated directly behind the lift.
I suggest anyone not familiar with the The University of Queensland at
St Lucia consult a refedex before attempting to find Prentice Centre.
