This is an announcement for the release of FElt version 3.00.
FElt is a free system for introductory level finite element analysis. FElt
is intended largely as a teaching tool. At this stage it should be able
to handle most static and dynamic linear analysis problems (structural
and thermal) that you'd find in a one or two term introductory class in
finite element analysis; it also has some capabilities for modal and
spectral analysis. The FElt element library currently contains fifteen
elements ranging from a simple spring to an 8-node brick. The main
FElt applications are all built around a single intuitive, powerful,
and easy-to-use input syntax.
The system offers three primary interface options - a standard command
line application, an interactive scripting environment, and an X11 based
environment. Velvet, the graphical environment allows you to
specify your problem in a CAD-like way and has numerous graphical
post-processing capabilities. Our brand new interactive scripting
environment, burlap, allows you to define your own elements,
analyses, and outputs with a powerful Matlab-like language. Tools
for file format conversion, scaling, and mesh generation are also
available.
Getting FElt ...
The latest version of FElt is always available via anonymous ftp from
cs.ucsd.edu in /pub/felt.
felt-3.00.src.tar.Z - all source and most documentation for FElt.
Get this one if you want to build the
package yourself (it should be easy).
felt-3.00.ps.Z - Postscript file for the 220+ page "FElt
User's Guide and Reference Manual". Because
of its size, this is not in the other
tar files. You'll need to get it
separately.
felt-3.00.i386-linux-1.0.tar.Z - binary distribution for Linux
felt-src.zip - DOS source distribution for 3.00
felt-exe.zip - DOS binary distribution for 3.00
The Linux binary distribution has been uploaded to sunsite.unc.edu in
/pub/Linux/Incoming/felt-3.00.tar.gz. In addition to the Linux
binary distribution, this tar file also includes felt-3.00.ps (the User's
Guide) for your convenience. If you want the sources you'll still
have to go to cs.ucsd.edu. If you don't find it in Incoming it has
probably been moved to /pub/Linux/apps/math.
Additional documentation and demonstrations are available via the FElt
WWW home page,
http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/atkinson/felt.html
We encourage you to check it out as it's probably the best way to look
at the package without having to actually ftp anything.
There is a FElt mailing list. To subscribe send the message
"subscribe felt-l" (without the quotes) as the only line in the
_body_ of an email message to listserv@mecheng.asme.org.
As usual, we would like to stress that feedback is always appreciated ...
we welcome all comments as to usability and functionality. If you're using
the package please drop us a note (or subscribe to the mailing list)
and let us know what you think, even if you've got no complaints whatsoever.
Mail bug reports, comments, hints, suggestion, complaints, etc. to one of
us at the email addresses below.
