Hello, everyone!
Slow as usual, I didn't make my June 1 deadline with this policy statement.
I received about 130 mails against, and about 240 mails for jobs. However,
many of those for put strict conditions: some wanted only jobs for developing
the kernel itself, or perhaps the libraries and the compilers as well,
some wanted at most a weekly summary (as is posted to comp.compilers).
Many of those opposing were very insistent, and argued well. About the
only good argument for jobs was that it helped make Linux look like a
commercially viable option.
Considering all this, the opinions were about fifty-fifty. I didn't make an
exact count, since it was not a vote, only a request for opinions.
New policy:
Therefore, as of today, there will be no job postings, except
perhaps in very exceptional circumstances. Please use the
misc.jobs.* groups, or perhaps the comp.os.linux.misc group
instead.
I've asked Linux International to set up a mailing list and WWW page
for Linux-related jobs as well. More about this when things are set
up.
Many people also expression concern over the LOCAL and COMMERCIAL
postings. I will continue to post the commercial postings, since I
think they are of interest to many and quite relevant. The local
stuff, however, needs some consideration. I'll see if I can set up
something so that they need not be posted world wide. (I don't invite
a second opionion poll, though; at the moment I've enough to do as it
is.) There is a mailing list for people running Linux users' groups
(linux-lugnuts@vger.rutgers.edu, I think; send "help" as the first line
in the body to majordomo@vger.rutgers.edu for more information).
If someone would be willing to keep a list of active Linux users'
groups (name, location, WWW-page/mailing-list if any, contact address,
and a short description of the activities and when and where the
regular meetings are) and post it periodically, that would be great.
I'm afraid I don't have the time to do it myself.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my query. It's nice to know
there are people actually reading this group. :-)
