Organization: BEST Internet (415) 964-2378

References:

The /pub/Linux/distributions/slackware/contrib/perl-5.000.tgz on Sunsite has a
problem. The archive *includes the "." directory*, with permissions 700. If
you unpack this package in /, as you are supposed to do, it will change the
permissions of / to 700, and suddenly root will be the only user who can
execute *anything*, read any directory, or even log in.

Of course, once you know the problem exists, it's simple to fix by the
expedient of setting the permissions of / back to 755. You can also work
around it by unpacking the archive someplace else and copying the contents to
the appropriate locations.
