1 DAY LEFT!
Daily Deal 50% OFF!
3 in 1 Portable Space Cooler: Air conditioner, humidifier, air purifier. While it's small in size, it's mighty in power, and will make quick work of cooling your home down for the benefit of your family, friends and work colleagues. During the heat of summer, the inside temperature of your home or place of business can become unbearable. However, the thought of a high power bill can also be more than enough incentive to just battle through and wear less clothing. Air conditioners, as a whole, are also expensive to buy, cumbersome to operate, and take up more room in your home than you typically have spare. Therein lies the question: Can there be another solution?

<!--Hot girl/boy/person summer? More like cold case summer! For the nex=

remiered June 15
I?ll be the first to admit it. I was a little late to the Chameleon=
party. Season 1 (Hollywood Con Queen) premiered in October 2020. I didn?t =
start listening to this offering from Campside Media until after Season 2 (=
High Rollers) premiered, but boy was I hooked. I?m talking binge-level, fal=
l-asleep-with-your-headphones in hooked. Chameleon isn?t your usual=
true crime podcast. For one, there?s no yellow tape or dead bodies (that w=
e know of). Instead, these criminals? terrain is a bit more nebulous: that =
squishy space where the psyche and cyberspace meet. I tried to expl=
ain the premise of Hollywood Con Queen to my partner, and, needless to say,=
he was a little confused. So here goes:

llinois (iHeartRadio Podcasts) ? Premiered July 8
From writer and veteran true crime pod host/producer Lauren Bright =
(Happy Face, Murder in Oregon, and The Murders at White House Farm) comes a=
twisted, heartwrenching tale of family, potential wrongful conviction, and=
cold-blooded murder. In 2007, while attending the funeral for his =
recently slain wife and three children, Chris Vaughn was arrested for those=
very same murders. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
But did the 32 year-old really trick his family into thinking he wa=
s taking them on a surprise trip to a water park, only to shoot them one-by=
-one and abandon their bodies in an SUV on the interstate?
The supposed motive (that Vaughn wanted to trade in his suburban da=
d life for that of a solo survivalist in Canada?s Yukon territory) plus cer=
tain elements of the case (thousands of dollars spent on strippers; Vaughn?=
s interest in druidism) certainly made for a juicy tabloid tale, but was th=
e one-time family man really guilty?
Fourteen years after the murders, Vaughn insists that he does not r=
emember the events that led to his serving four consecutive life terms in a=
n Illinois prison. Could forensic evidence prove his innocence? And, more i=
mportantly, if Vaughn didn?t kill his family, who did? Featuring never-befo=
re-heard firsthand interviews with Vaughn, his parents, his siblings, and e=
xtended family, Murder in Illinois dives deep into a case that is anything =
but open-and-shut. International Infamy with Ashley Flowers ? Parca=

<!--erhaps it was inevitable that when I qualified as a doctor and came t=
o choose a branch of psychiatry, it would be forensic work that attracted m=
e most. The word forensic derives from the Latin forum, meaning a place whe=
re disputes are heard or a court of law. My colleagues and I assess and man=
age people whose mental health issues lead to legal problems, which may lan=
d them in criminal or family court. In addition to giving expert testimony =
about people?s state of mind, we also care for that small number of people =
who have committed acts of violence while mentally unwell or offenders who =
have become mentally ill while in prison, which is more common. I gained a=
n additional qualification as a psychotherapist when I realized that I want=
ed to focus on the human stories behind acts of serious violence. Carl Jung=
once wrote to Freud that he felt ?the reason for evil in the world is that=
people are unable to tell their stories;? I have seen firsthand that there=
is truth in this. The case stories I describe in our book explore my patie=
nts? accounts of their lives and what they have taught me about our common =
humanity and capacity for both cruelty and compassion. It seems to me that=
the best crime writers have traveled the same path as they explore the amb=
iguities of good and evil. I have heard it said of detective fiction, that =
?when you know why, you know who.? Finding that ?why? is as important for m=
e as for the crime writer inventing a story or for any real detective. Jus=
t as narrative causality is the engine of fiction, the ?why? provides the b=
asis for forensic approaches to murder trials. It is not enough for me to t=
ell the court that a defendant had a recognized medical condition at the ti=
me of the killing. Their mental state must explain what happened, giving se=
nse to the senseless. The jury is then free to accept or dismiss that story=
The ?why? will influence a judgement in criminal court as to whether the =
defendant?s agency was diminished due to their mental state, which under Br=
itish law would make them guilty of manslaughter instead of murder. After t=
he trial, if they are convicted, their narrative may change in prison. One =
young woman I worked with, Kezia (who stabbed a care worker she thought was=
possessed by a demon) moves from thinking ?My mental illness made me do it=
? to ?When I was unwell, I thought I was in danger, but now I can see that =
I was wrong.? That is what success looks like for a forensic professional: =
an opening of the mind that can gradually lead a patient to take responsibi=
lity and move forward. One mind at a time, this makes the world a safer pla=
ce. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
A similarly ambitious mental shift is required of the psychotherapist. As a=
young trainee, I needed to rethink many preconceptions, some of which prob=
ably came from those mystery novels I?d grown up on. Despite the vast array=
of made-up murderers stalking through English country houses and quaint vi=
llages, the UK?s homicide rate today is around 700 per year in a population=
of 66 million. In the US (where the population is five times ours) the int=
entional homicide rate is about 18 times higher, but still nowhere near the=
roiling epidemic suggested by American crime novels, films, and television=
programs. Studying the body of research into violent behavior, I would als=
o find certain recurring risk factors had to align, like numbers in a bicyc=
le lock, before someone committed a fatal act. These can include being youn=
g and male, in combination with things like substance abuse, social isolati=
on, and previous criminal history. The final number which releases fatal vi=
olence will be idiosyncratic, possibly some innocuous action by a victim wh=
ich has meaning only for the perpetrator. For some of my patients this may =
have taken the form of a simple greeting or a smile. I learned early on tha=
t mental illness was not usually one of those ?bike lock? risk factors. Des=
pite ubiquitous ideas in our culture about crazed killers or mad sexual off=
enders, it is rare for anyone who is mentally ill to harm another person, l=
et alone take a life? sadly, they are far more likely to be victims, and fo=
rensic psychiatrists will not assume that violence is evidence of mental di=
sorder. I recognize that writing crime fiction must be a daunting task, esp=
ecially in a contemporary world where social media and mobile phones presen=
t dreadful plot problems, just as they do for real criminals. Who can disap=
pear anymore? Who is undetectable in our time? When I sit with violent off=
enders in therapy, I am trying to discover with my patient what the functio=
n of their violence is for them. What problem do they think it solves in th=
eir life? I try to hold in mind that however terrible their offense, they a=
re generally people with parents, friends, hopes and dreams; they were all =
children once, like any of us. In the most compelling crime writing, I?ve f=
ound that the author also allows us to consider the perpetrator?s whole of =
life story. ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
