<!--And so success had found Evelyn Nesbit. She made her debut on Broadwa=
y as one of the famed ?Florodora? girls in an eponymous musical that was fa=
mous for a sextet of beautiful women, serenaded by frock-coated choristers.=
During that time, Evelyn Nesbit and her mother were living in a squalid tw=
o-bedroom apartment opposite a casino. Both Nesbits were fond of going out =
to dinner, but the mother was careful that no ?detrimentals?, as she termed=
them, should associate with her daughter. To Mrs. Nesbit, a ?detrimental? =
meant a man without money. Stanford White, who was considered a ?guardian a=
ngel? (code word for sugar daddy) of showgirls, took up Evelyn Nesbit as hi=
s next beneficiary. Stanford White, a wealthy architect, responsible for de=
signing countless landmark buildings in Manhattan, became the Nesbits? key =
to a life of luxury. White, who was thirty years older than Evelyn, had met=
her at a theatre one night and soon after invited her to visit the hideawa=
y he had built high atop Madison Square Garden ? a place filled with a myri=
ad of Japanese lanterns and a red velvet swing. One evening at White?s town=
house on 24th Street, after drinking several glasses of champagne, Nesbit l=
ost consciousness and awoke to find herself naked in bed with White with te=
lltale spots of blood on the bedsheets. This event would soon join multiple=
other occasions of White drugging and raping her. She told no one about th=
e rape until, several years later, she confided in Harry Thaw, the milliona=
ire playboy who would later become her husband. As you continue to read thi=
s article, you would also find that Harry Thaw adds a whole new definition =
to a ?Mama?s Boy?. Stanford White was very much a family man so Evelyn knew=
there was little hope for marriage. So when Harry Kendall Thaw, the scion =
of a wealthy Pittsburgh family, relentlessly pursued her, she finally conse=
nted to marriage. Looking past his immense wealth; Thaw was a drug addict w=
ith a reputation for bizarre and abusive behavior. Merely days after being =
married, he began to show his true colors: He would often beat Evelyn with =
a horsewhip. The abuse got so bad that Nesbit decided to tell Thaw about Wh=
ite so he could channel his anger elsewhere. Her plan worked far more effec=
tively than she had planned, the beatings happened less frequently, Thaw ha=
d become obsessively jealous of Stanford White. He already resented White b=
ecause he believed that White had barred his entry into certain social circ=
les, Evelyn?s story would only add kerosene to the flames. His fury over Wh=
ite?s ?violation? of his wife would lead him to shoot the architect at poin=
t-blank range in 1906 before hundreds of theatregoers during a performance =
in Madison Square Garden- a building that White had designed. A Scandal had=
erupted- it trickled down from New York?s upper tiers to the rest of the w=
orld. Harry Thaw leaves court after being released on $35,000 bail. Image S=
ource: the Bettman Archive
The trial was a sensation that gripped the nation. No murder had ever recei=
ved more press attention before Thaw Vs the State of New York. New York?s d=
aily papers reinforced what moralists described as an ?unhealthy fascinatio=
n with the degeneracy of the so-called higher classes.? To the delight of t=
he reading public, Nesbit?s relationship with White would be examined in ex=
quisite detail. Within weeks, crowds filled Nickelodeon and Vaudeville hous=
es to watch not one but two moving pictures that meticulously re-created th=
e sordid affair ? one financed by the Thaw family fortune, portraying Harry=
as an innocent, aggrieved husband- it was produced by Thomas Edison (yes, =
that Edison). Thaw?s mother hired several PR agents and the best legal team=
money could buy. Thaw?s defense attorneys pleaded temporary insanity as th=
eir defense while the district attorney expected to send him to the electri=
c chair. Mrs. Thaw was also said to have promised Evelyn millions if she te=
stified againstthe state. Her testimony was so explicit and shocking that P=
resident Theodore Roosevelt (R-New York) himself called on the newspapers n=
ot to print it verbatim. Thaw was found not guilty by reason of insanity (l=
egal corruption was pretty high back then) and sentenced to incarceration f=
or life at the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Fishki=
ll. His wealth allowed him to live out his days in comfort?..The End. Not r=
eally- In 1913, Thaw escaped the mental institution and was driven to the C=
anadian border ? thanks to a successful plan orchestrated by his mother onl=
y to be caught kidnapping and molesting a teenage boy in 1916. Of course, t=
he boy- like several of Thaw's victims were paid hush money-courtesy of Mrs=
William Thaw. Meanwhile back in 1910, Evelyn had just given birth to a bab=
y boy-Russell William Thaw had been conceived during a conjugal visit at Ma=
tteawan. Thaw strongly denied that he was the father from the moment he hea=
rd of Russell?s birth. In the late 1910s, Nesbit began performing in vaudev=
ille acts. When silent films surpassed them in popularity, she starred in a=
t least 10 between 1914 and 1922. But nearly all the money she earned suppo=
rted her drug addictions: morphine use and dabbling in cocaine. Her drug ad=
diction also destroyed her acting career. Film studios stopped hiring her, =
and she ultimately ended up receiving treatment. But in 1921, after getting=
back on her feet, she opened a tearoom in Midtown Manhattan. And into the =
?20s, she performed in summer cabarets in Atlantic City. But after being ch=
eated financially by club owners, and continuing a lonely existence, she at=
tempted suicide in 1926 by drinking disinfectant. She recovered, and in 195=
2 moved with Russell to California, where she cared for his three children =
and taught ceramics classes. Although Henry Thaw would file for divorce in =
1916 from Evelyn Nesbit, who at that point wanted nothing to do with him, h=
e would ultimately leave her 1% of his net worth- $10,000 (nearly 120,000 U=
SD in today?s money) after his death in 1947. Thaw predeceased Nesbit by 20=
years. He died in Miami Beach in 1947 of coronary thrombosis, and Nesbit w=
ould succumb to natural causes at 82 in 1967 in Santa Monica ? taking what =
really happened with Stanford White to the grave.--->=20
