TiMidity is a MIDI to WAVE converter for Linux machines.
It uses Gravis Ultrasound-compatible patch files to generate digital
audio data from General MIDI files. The audio data can be played
through any sound card for which /dev/dsp is supported. With a fast
computer and good patches, high-quality music can be played in real
time. Timidity has a primitive interactive interface based on ncurses
that provides rewind, fast forward, and master volume control during
playing. It can also be run non-interactively in the background.
TiMidity Features:
* 32 dynamically allocated fully independent voices
* Compatibility with GUS patch files
* Output to 16- or 8-bit (linear) audio device, file, or
stdout at any sampling rate
* Interactive mode with real-time status display
* Support for transparent loading of compressed MIDI files and
patch files
* Support for the following MIDI events:
- Program change
- Key pressure
- Channel main volume
- Tempo
- Panning
- Damper pedal (Sustain)
- Pitch wheel
- Change drum set
Version 0.1a of TiMidity is available at URL

or by FTP on sunsite.unc.edu, directory /pub/Linux/apps/sound/players,
files timidity-0.1a.tar.gz (76kB) and timidity-lib-0.1.tar.gz (288kB).
