The Linux Software Map has been in a sorry state all this year. The
reason, for what it's worth, is that it's quite a bit of manual work
to add new entries to the database, since most entries need some fixing:
the date might be in the wrong format, the name of a field might be
mistyped, etc. I have some hacks to reduce to work to a fraction of
what it might be, but it still takes several days to process a batch
of new entries. If the entries were correct, there would be almost no
work, and I would be able to put out a new version of the database very
often.

To fix this, I'm changing the way new entries are submitted. The new
method requires mailing the new entry to the LSM robot (a procmail script).
The robot checks the entry for syntactical correctness. The entry is
added to the database if it looks correct; if there is some error, the
robot sends back a list of them and does NOT add the entry to the database.

The LSM robot address is

	lsm@osf-alpha.cs.helsink.fi

To add a new entry, make subject of the mail be "add". Any other subject
will cause a help message to be sent back.

The robot is now open for testing. Please send all new entries to
the robot; if there are any problems, send mail to me (liw@iki.fi).
For the time being, the old way of submitting LSM entries (i.e., uploading
them to sunsite's Incoming directory) will also work. When I get some
confidence that the LSM robot works, I will no longer accept submissions
in any other way.

I will put out a new version of the database as soon as I've processed
all entries that have been uploaded by today (a couple of months' worth).
