Perhaps, but the athena{,-as-well} mailhubs aren't the only agents
producing athena.mit.edu as an originating address. SIPB has a few
services that do this independently, e.g., user@athena.mit.edu is the
default for all articles posted through news.mit.edu. Is it expected
that SIPB should cutover its news server and client software now also?

I realize the athena.mit.edu news-posting volume is much smaller than
mail (something like 130 articles/day vs. 15000 messages/day last
week), but news tends to be more visible to the outside world. And it
would seem rather broken if Athena users originated their news and
mail from different addresses.

Unfortunately, there's a lot to change/reconfigure/rebuild, e.g.,
   senator-bedfellow.mit.edu:/news/lib/inn.conf
   /mit/sipb/$bindir/Pnews
   /mit/sipb/$bindir/rrn
   /mit/sipbsrc/src/lib/elisp/gnus.el
   /mit/sipbsrc/src/xrn.beta{,2,3}/config.h
   /afs/sipb/project/news/src/nntp{,.new}/inews/inews.c
   /afs/sipb/project/tin/src/Makefile
   /afs/sipb/project/trn/$bindir/Pnews
   /afs/sipb/project/trn/$bindir/trn
