Subject: obsolete engineers
The following story was taken from Bits and Bytes published on page F1
of today's San Jose Mercury News.
---------------------------------------------
Sounding like a parody of its marketing literature, Sun Microsystems on
Tuesday told 40 workers their "skill sets no longer match the company's
core competencies and product strategies."
The translation: You're fired.
The inference: And it's all your fault.
"It's complete doublespeak, but they don't want to use the word
`fired`", said an employee. Company spokeswoman Cindee Mock said the
layoffs reflect Sun's belief an employee's "skill set" becomes obsolete
at the rate of 20 percent per year.
