Is this suppsed to happen? The file I texed was purely text.
FYI, my .dvirc is set like the following

P /mit/nihongo/lib/jtex/jfonts:/usr/athena/lib/tex/fonts:/afs/sipb/project/outland/lib/tex/fonts/tfm:/afs/sipb/project/outland/libtex/fonts/pk

DVIPS now selects 600dpi TeX/LaTeX fonts for the new Athena printers
by default. Use "dvips -D300" for 300dpi printers.
If you set environment variable PKFONTS, you will have problems unless
it includes /afs/sipb/project/outland/lib/tex/fonts/{tfm,pk}.
