Currently, the SIPB server machines are undergoing changes of
hardware. In particular, our main everything-server, charon, is in
the process of being converted from a MicroVAX II to a DECstation. In
the process, it is ackquiring new services...
One of these new services is that which used to be provided by
pit-manager, or rtfm. While we have moved all the information that
used to be on pit-manager over to the new machine, and while we have
turned on the mail and ftp services, we have not yet turned on the NFS
server for a few reasons.
First of all, we have gotten word on the network load on one of the
main Athena ftp sites, aenaeas, which is also prep.ai.mit.edu, and
athena-dist.mit.edu. Many sites outside MIT will mount the
filesystems from aenaeas, which puts undue network load on the subnet.
Currently, the machine that is hosting the rtfm services is on the
same subnet as all of the w20 cluster. In order not to hose that
subnet, we have not yet turned on NFS service.
It is in the plans to actually put an NFS server up on the machine in
question, but we need to decide how we plan to accomplish this, and
what services we plan to provide via NFS.
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
