How do we convert old Pixmap files to be used with the new xscreensaver
program?

You don't need to "convert" to pixmap file, you need to give
xscreensaver an explicit pathname because of a bug in the toolkit.
Instead of "bitmap-name" you need to specify
"/mit/mplubrat/bitmap-name" (or whatever). The X Consortium is aware
of this problem and it will eventually be fixed.
