For the NFSS stuff, I would suggest also creating a new format with only
the NFSS loaded, and make it available under the name 'nlatex' or some
such.
I do this at home, and it works fine.

re: where to put generated PK's.  I put them under /tmp at home, and
move them into the "main" dir if I feel motivated.  Putting them in some
non-backed-up rli AFS directory sounds like a decent idea; that makes it
easy to see what fonts are "missing" and DTRT.
