X VERSION, RELEASE, and PATCH LEVEL MACHINE:
X version 6.17, release ?, patch level ?
CLIENT MACHINE and OPERATING SYSTEM:
A standard IBM RT/PC, or Vax station that all of us athena kids have access to
SYNOPSIS:
Reading a newsgroup takes too long. Saving too many articles without purging
them.
DESCRIPTION:
For a while there the Newsgroup worked well, but it has become increasingly
slower. I'm not sure if it is the times I'm using it at or what, but to read
a group with 36 articles in it took about two or three minutes. Also, my
newsgroups I have selected keep storing unread articles without purging old
ones. It also stores the old read articles until I have thousands. I need
to be able to purge the old articles, and have a maximum cap on how many new
unread articles can be stored.
REPEAT BY:
I always have this error. It's slow, and won't purge articles.
SAMPLE FIX:
How about having a maximum ammount of articles a newsgroup will have as
unread. There should not be more than two or three hundred articles per
group. Likewise, the stored old articles should have a cap of about 200
articles. The older versions (i.e. two or three years ago) of xrn used to
automatically purge my unread articles if there were more than three hundred
or so. Heck, if you put a cap on the stored articles, that may help any
memory problems.
