1.=C2=A0The COVID-19 pandemic has been deeply disruptive for supply chains,=
yet some predictions about how supply chains are changing are overblown, a=
ccording to two industry experts.
In separate web presentations, MIT professors Yossi Sheffi and David Simchi=
-Levi offered their thoughts on how supply chains will =E2=80=94 and won=E2=
=80=99t =E2=80=94 change (https://t.e2ma.net/click/x98pce/tmsulgm/1cyq5z)=
=C2=A0in the era of the coronavirus. Their takeaways:
Supply chain restructuring was underway before the pandemic, Simchi-Levi sa=
id, spurred in part but not wholly by the U.S.-China trade war. Some compan=
ies are thinking about bringing manufacturing closer to demand while others=
are looking toward fully reshoring.
Companies are unlikely to completely abandon China, said Sheffi, the direct=
or of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. While some companies=
have been leaving China over the last decade as costs go up, Sheffi said m=
ost can=E2=80=99t, and won=E2=80=99t, move their supply chains out of the c=
ountry completely.
Reshoring isn=E2=80=99t necessarily the answer. The pandemic has many specu=
lating about bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., but Simchi-Levi said =
that is unlikely to offer what companies are looking for. =E2=80=9CReshorin=
g does not guarantee resiliency,=E2=80=9D he said, pointing out that consol=
idating geographically brings its own set of risks and regulations.=C2=A0

al call center, but as COO of Peak Support, she does just that =E2=80=94 an=
d loves it. =E2=80=9CI never thought =E2=80=98I want to run a call center w=
hen I grow up.=E2=80=99 But I also never imagined I could work with such an=
incredible group of people, in a company with such a positive culture,=E2=
=80=9D she said. =E2=80=9CThat=E2=80=99s what it=E2=80=99s really all about=
=E2=80=94 not finding the right industry, but finding the right company an=
d the right people.=E2=80=9D
Some recent observations from the MIT Sloan graduate on diversity, equity, =
and inclusion:
A lack of women in leadership positions at a company sends the message, =E2=
=80=9CWomen can=E2=80=99t succeed here,=E2=80=9D Clark Steiman said. =E2=80=
=9CIt=E2=80=99s never a coincidence; if the senior leadership is dominated =
by white, cisgender men, that=E2=80=99s happening for a reason.=E2=80=9D
Leaders need to commit to diversity when their organizations are small (htt=
ps://t.e2ma.net/click/x98pce/tmsulgm/h5yq5z) =E2=80=94 ideally, when they h=
ave fewer than 10 people, she said. =E2=80=9CIf you have 20 people in your =
U.S. office and they=E2=80=99re all white, you=E2=80=99re behind. It=E2=80=
=99s not too late to start, but you already face an uphill battle.=E2=80=9D
3.=C2=A0Proteins in blood plasma serve as biomarkers for cancer and can pla=
y an important role in risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and drug deve=
lopment. Now, a new study demonstrates early detection of lung cancer (http=
s://t.e2ma.net/click/x98pce/tmsulgm/xxzq5z) through fast, thorough protein =
analysis.
Researchers typically face a choice in studying the set of all proteins in =
a patient=E2=80=99s plasma, known as the proteome: either they choose to me=
asure the levels of a small, a priori (determined from reasoning) known sub=
set of proteins, or they choose to interrogate the entire proteome. The lat=
ter approach is substantially more comprehensive in the data it provides bu=
t has until now been slow =E2=80=94 taking weeks for a single plasma sample=
=E2=80=94 and, as a result, expensive.
A new paper published in Nature Communications by a group of researchers fr=
om Brigham and Women=E2=80=99s Hospital, MIT, the Koch Institute, and the l=
ife sciences startup Seer describes a new technique for interrogating the p=
roteome. This technique is both relatively comprehensive and, at the same t=
ime, fast, taking a few hours. That means it is poised to break the trade-o=
ff between comprehensive and fast interrogation of the proteome.
=E2=80=9CBecause the underlying methodology is fast, we can do this quickly=
and cheaply,=E2=80=9D said Vivek Farias, an MIT Sloan professor and a co-a=
uthor of the paper. =E2=80=9CWe can make early detection a reality.=E2=80=

ns. With a better understanding of the technology, companies can take steps=
to protect themselves.

is evolving type of synthetic media, where a person in an image or video is=
swapped with another person's likeness.

a few. To protect a company and its employees, executives should:
Consider using semantic passwords for conversations, or a secret question y=
ou ask or answer at the start of a call.
If you have a voice authentication service or biometric security features, =
ask providers whether their tools are up to date.
Educate employees. Explain deepfake attacks might become more frequent and =
there is no magic formula for detecting them.
