1. Data analytics has become a key part of business success=C2=A0=E2=80=94 =
but capitalizing on data depends on building the right team. Here are=C2=A0=

Data engineers=C2=A0collect and manage data, and manage storage of the data=
. Their work is the foundation of a data operation as they take large amoun=
ts of raw data and prepare it for others to use in making business decision=
s.
Data scientists=C2=A0figure out what to do with that data, using artificial=
intelligence and machine learning to drive analytics and derive insights. =
While research and data scientists traditionally had PhDs, that is no longe=
r a requirement of the job, said Michelle Li, program director of MIT Sloan=
=E2=80=99s Master of Business Analytics program, who said MBAn graduates of=
ten get data jobs with =E2=80=9Cscientist=E2=80=9D in the title.
Data translators=C2=A0serve as a bridge to traditional business operations,=
translating the insights gained from analytics into actions the companies =
can take to gain value.
Knowledge engineers, ontologists, and other emerging roles seek to take the=
outcomes of analytics findings and combine those with information from ins=
ide and outside the company to formulate actionable answers to business que=
stions.
2. The rapid shift to remote work has created new challenges for organizati=
ons,=C2=A0but survey data shows firms around the world are experimenting wi=
th creative solutions. Writing in MIT Sloan Management Review, senior lectu=
rer Donald Sull and co-authors shared five principles that can help leaders=
=C2=A0more effectively manage a distributed workforce (https://t.e2ma.net/c=
lick/1sajce/tmsulgm/h17u3z):
Maintain frequent, transparent, and consistent communication.
Provide support for physical and mental health.
Help distributed employees stay productive and engaged.
Help at-home employees manage the blurry boundary between their professiona=
l and personal lives.
Don=E2=80=99t lose sight of the company=E2=80=99s strategic priorities.=C2=
=A0It=E2=80=99s understandable that a once-in-a-lifetime crisis would distr=
act leaders from their existing priorities, but it=E2=80=99s also a mistake=
, the authors wrote. =E2=80=9CIn many cases, strategic objectives set befor=
e COVID-19 will remain as important or even more critical in the future,=E2=
=80=9D they said.
3.=C2=A0The discussion about how to reopen the U.S. economy=C2=A0is often f=
ramed as one of two stark choices: Keep the entire population on lockdown f=
or a long time and risk a slump on par with the Great Depression =E2=80=94 =
or reopen the entire economy at once and cause more than a million avoidabl=
e deaths.
A working paper from four MIT economics professors provides a third option:=
A targeted lockdown that protects Americans over the age of 65 until a COV=
ID-19 vaccine can be developed while reopening the economy sooner for those=
at a lower risk.
Depending on how this =E2=80=9Coptimal lockdown=E2=80=9D is implemented, th=
e result could be as many as 1.37 million lives saved while allowing workin=
g-age Americans from 20 to 65 to experience =E2=80=9Ca less severe and shor=
ter lockdown (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1sajce/tmsulgm/xt8u3z).=E2=80=9D
Further limiting social interactions between those older than 65 and younge=
r people would reduce the length of the lockdown to about a year, the resea=
rchers projected. One scenario modeled by the authors saw a fatality rate a=
s low as 0.02% of the adult population and economic losses of just 7% of GD=
