Bill,
SLIP is not supported as part of the release, so I don't think
you should be sending mail to rel-eng about it. The reason why
/srvd/etc/slattach doesn't work is that SLIP (and the slattach) which is
in the Athena kernel does not support header compression. The SLIP in
the kernel which I provided to you, does support header compression, but
it requires a different version of slattach.

So there's nothing wrong with the slattach that's in the
release; it's just not compatible with the version of SLIP in the kernel
I provided you. If you want to champion including SLIP with header
compression into the Vax and RT kernel, by my guest; you can tell the
ART team that I've running with the new code without any side effects,
and that integrating the new code into the kenerl is a very simple
operation --- so simple, in fact, that it's much easier for me to go and
build a new kernel each time rather than to champion putting it into the
next release. :-)
