John Carr suggests that the workstation update process should modify
/etc/athena/login/config so that in addition to choosing which X
server to use, backing-store and save-under are disabled if the
display attached to the workstation is a color display, since in
almost all circumstances, color workstations should not use
backing-store and save-under.

I suspect it's too late to get this into 7.2, but do you think this is
a reasonable idea?

My reply should not have been interpreted as dismissing the bug
report. The bug will not be fixed for 7.2, but it can and should be
worked around. The install procedure knows what type of display a
machine has, and edits /etc/ttys based on this information. It is not
hard to change the xlogin configuration as well.
