Some of the errors seem to be permissions in the source tree... I just
discovered lines like "makedepend: cannot read all of string_utils.c" is
due to things being mode 400. (We have a slightly different fileserver
on the rel-eng cell that honors owner and group permissions).
Unfortunately, our utilities for fixing permissions in the source tree
is not running currently, because it has recently been looping. <sigh>
Because some of it may have been AFS related, I am going to run our
utilities on that subset of the tree, redo the build, and send the
results (or a clean bill of health).
