I don't know whether this helps to diagnose the problem, but I noticed
that when I bounced the X server with C-Alt-F1 C-Alt-F7, on the return
to VT 7, all the lights on the PS/2 keyboard started to flash in sync,
and the monitor displayed a corrupted, partial image of what had
previously been on my screen.
