get dead printer cartridge?

Is there any chance that I could get or borrow a used up athena
printer cartridge? I recently acquired a HP LaserJet 5SI printer from
a neighbor whose basement we were helping clean out. I don't know if
it works at all and there was no cartridge in it; I'm reluctant to
spend money on a new cartridge if it's going to turn out that the
printer is actually broken. It takes HP C909(A or X) cartridges,
which I think some athena printers use. Thanks!
