lou, Tim called me earlier, and I told him someone

forwarded it to you.

A problem with the-good machine. May need to involve Hotline.

From Hubert
"i'm not sure. i think something (perhaps an automated update?) caused it
[something] to put a /etc/nologin file to prevent people from logging in.
but i noticed this for like 3 days, so something must have went haywire.
i guess i'm not surprised then that merely rebooting the machine isn't
going to fix much..."

Hey folks,

I have a Dell linux athena box that has a number of problems. There is no picture on the monitor. Lou came by about a month ago and replaced the video card. Don't know if that has anything to do with this though. The other problem is that no one seems to be able to log into the machine locally or remotely. Any help appreciatted.

Thanks,
Timothy Griffin

Hoeteck,

I've not been able to do anything with it either. I've a call in to
Hotline but they've not responded. I'll ping them again today. Most
of the history is in the log above. Lemme know if you have any ideas.

Thanks, Tim

Thanks, Tim, for the info. It's hard to do anything at this point
since remote access and the physical display don't work (I don't
even get the dell logo when I power up the machine), so I think
we should wait for the hotline folks to look at it first.

If the display works, but the machine still fails to boot due to
network problems (it'd probably start spilling error messages or
hang around the time it tries to start AFS), that's probably a
problem with the recent Athena-Linux update and the following
should fix it (from cfyi [10618]):

---------------
[...] private machines can be fixed by running:

  boot: linux single
  insmod 3c59x
  /etc/init.d/network start
  mii-tool -R
  reboot

This will cause the machine to come up with slow network
performance; it can then take the patch release and get normal
performance.
---------------

Hope that's helpful!

-hoeteck
