The machine JUBJUB-BIRD (ESG05), a PC/RT 115, SN 26-0003853
located in the 24-618 cluster, is still crashing. It has been giving
problems for several months. The machine has previously had its software
re-installed and its disk replaced, but problems still remain. The
situation has improved somewhat, with crashes down from approximately
one per day to one per week, but they are still occurring. The error
messages are usually one of "panic:IOCC/PMUC exception" or "unclaimed
stray interrupt". There have been multiple reports of crashes while it
is being used. Once when someone was logging in to turn in a paper, and
just recently while a user was inc'ing mail. Since the end-of-term
crunch is coming up, the prospect that this machine might crash while
someone is doing critical work is serious. Given the history of this
machine, further repair may just be wasted effort - a replacement would
seem to be a good idea. If there aren't any more RT's in stock, we'll
gladly accept a VS3100 or a DECstation.
