Bad serial ports on mad-scientist (Indy)

My Indy (mad-scientist in E40-342f) had a bad serial port when I first
tried using serial on it. I switched to using the second port and that
worked fine, but now it has gone bad as well. (Interestingly both
ports exhibit the same failure mode - communcation into the Indy
works, but outgoing traffic does not.)
