I just talked to Brent at SGI Tech Support and he said that the
cache ecc/parity error was a problem that they have seen with the R5000s.
He suggested trying patch 1268 from the SGI web site.

The software solution seems to be the way to go as I have
replacedxc the logic board and all 8 memory chips without the problem
going away.
