Date: Sat, 20 Apr 1996 17:38:39 -0400 To: hotline@MIT.EDU From: John Hawkinson <jhawk@MIT.EDU> A user came in an reported that w20-575-12 had hung on him (it's a SPARC classic). I went in and took a look, and it was stuck with the window manager waiting for the user to click and place a window, neither the mouse or the keyboard responded. Pressing STOP-A yielded no results, nor did unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in all (all connections). The neighboring workstation (see below) appeared idle, so I borrowed it's keyboard (and cables & mouse), and had the same results. I power cycled it, and it rebooted just fine. No idea what caused this -- flaky hardware? The neighboring workstation, w20-575-13, also a SPARC classic, had a different problem. It's screen was all black, but both the workstation and the monitor displayed green LEDs, so were clearly on. Like it's neighbor, STOP-A had no effect. I double-checked the monitor cable, and it was soundly seated. I power cycled it, and it came back up and started the normal boot sequence (I didn't wait for it to finish, but it fingers now so I suspect it's fine. Again, possibly flaky hardware? I don't know. --jhawk
