Discussed compatibility issues for DECstations in 7.3. Additional
symlinks will be added. The notable addition is that we will now
compile and install crypt on platforms where the vendor does not
supply it. Ezra will take care of changes.
Release tracking: There is a problem with the current release in that
we do not have a complete picture of everything that changed and why.
This is supposedly a "bugfix" release, but some fairly major changes
were made to support the new platforms. For this release we will do
our best to make sure that everything makes it into the system release
notes.
In the future, we must do a better job of knowing what changes between
releases. We need to come up with a system which keeps an accurate
changelog. This information is needed at two levels: each change to
each source file for auditing/tracking purposes, and functional
changes to the system for release notes and more general use. The
system we come up with may be some combination of technology and
procedure. It must be easy enough that developers do not try to
bypass it.
We will attempt to define such a system in September with the
expectation of having it in place before any changes are made to the
source tree for the next release.
Tropical fish were not mentioned in this meeting.
