NFS -> AFS Conversion Meeting Minutes
July 17, 1991
Attending: Carla Fermann, Dot Bowe, Peter Roden, Kim Carney, Anne Salemme,
Lucien Van Elsen, Jon Rochlis, Andy Oakland, Richard Basch,
Mark Rosenstein, Jeanne Cavanaugh, Jerry Larivee, Derrick Kong
User Services - Carla listed the following as tools and issues to be
resolved prior to the conversation to AFS,
chmod -r, chown/chgrp, creating lockers,
quota increase, hesiod/attach, locker
migration, servers "filling up", copying
files, make_readable, /quota/ucb, smarter ls
User Services favors a mandatory conversion.
Documentation stills needs to prove input.
Operations - Anne listed the following as important goals for the conversion,
minimize locker unavailability
establish schedule, and stick to it
method to translate current permission to acls
automatically moving home-dir lockers, some hand work for others
tape backups before conversion
log data on transfer
automatic deletion of nfs locker after successful conversion
minimize handwork
Anne will send her prepared material out for comments
Operations favors a properly scheduled and announced
mandatory conversion.
Sys Dev - Mark and Richard listed the following as development projects
for the conversion,
modify AFS to allow hard links
resolution of ls
more friendly fs--> evolved to 'permit'
increased zephyr load a concern
automatically expunge 'deleted' files
moira - capability to create lockers under AFS
quotas
protection (already completed)
should moira know about partitions?
AFS command server
disk watch script
Mark prefers a voluntary conversion.
Probe prefers a voluntary conversion.
As a whole, the sysdev consensus will be forthcoming.
Discussion ensued about having a tool to walk a directory hierarchy
and set permissions. This is further complicated by ls, and there was some
concern that the user may have a false understanding of the permissions
on their files. After discussing a number of options it was decided that
the best solution would be a new command, "permit", and a user
education campaign.
Jerry mentioned that tar won't preserve permissions, as it does under NFS.
Jon brought to light the fact that AFS provides a nice set of tools for
moving lockers across partitions. This should resolve User Service's
locker migration requirements.
It was decided that the changes to make_readable were minor, and the changes
could be handled by the consultants.
/quota/ucb can be addressed by educating the consultants.
hard links - Peter preferred to hold off on this for now.
ACTION ITEMS for Next Meeting:
Mark - check with jik on expunge/delete, proposal for "permit",
Lucien - get more info on increased zephyr load
Carla/Jeanne -get info from doc group
