A loosely organized set of folks from IS, LCS and the Libraries have been
meeting off and on for the last year to share experiences and knowledge related
to distributed computing and library-ship. The intent was to exchange
information that would be of use in the Distributed Library Initiative that is
now underway.
At an "organizational" meeting last week, we reaffirmed the goals mentioned
above, and made some decisions about how we'll operate for the immediate future.
We will continue to be more loosely organized than committees and taskgroups
typically are, but we also decided to meet somewhat more predictably (roughly
every 2 or three weeks on average), to have a set agenda for each meeting (both
of these are departures from the past), and to operate the meetings in a
workshop mode. As always, these are OPEN MEETINGS, will be announced to the
elibdev and developers lists as well as appropriate lists within the Libraries.
As always, we encourage participation by anyone who is interested. In addition,
we expect that from time to time, we will be inviting different experts to help
advise on specific aspects of projects, and will be sponsoring from time to time
presentations on topics of interest that might not be directly associated with
any single project.
The format of each meeting will be divided as follows:
1. a mini-workshop led by one or more folks focussed on a specific
project's issues, problems, etc. and discussion from the group.
2. project status update
3. roundtable on other topics, and meeting planning.
So, the meetings of elibdev, and the projects to be discussed, are:
September 25 Carter Snowden ejournals
October 9 Bill Cattey z39.50, brs & willow
October 30 Kathy Green athena access to library, owl
November 6 (TENTATIVE)
November 20 (TENTATIVE)
As each meeting approaches, we will be sending out reminders to the elibdev and
developers lists.
