Network Services (now DCNS), Administrative Systems Development,
and the Registrar's office are jointly working on a prototype project
to build a client-server system which will allow students to view
their registration information from workstations (initially Athena
workstations). Students will also be able to change their directory
information, and in future releases might be able to do more
interactions with the Registrar's Office.

Since this is one of the first MIT administrative databases to
be delivered via a client-server architecture over an open network, I
would like to begin discussing the alternatives for building a
"secure" service. Will students need an extra password, or should
steps be taken to ensure their current passwords are "good", etc.? I
have created a public mailing list (and soon a discuss meeting archive)
called "registrar-dev" to discuss this as well as other aspects of the
design. You can use listmaint to add yourself, or send me mail if you
cannot access Moira.

	Scott Thorne 3-2978

P.S. We are going to have a meeting to discuss possible solutions to the
security problem next Tuesday at 10am in E32-126, please join us if you are
interested.
