A funny story in last night's Seattle Times...
It seems the INS and FBI are unwilling to grant US citizenship to
persons without legible fingerprints.
There is a small pool of such people who have been repeatedly
denied citizenship, some of whom have resided in the US for
deacdes.
Ms. Pushp Grover, 53, who has lived in the US for 27 years was
just denied citizenship again due to fingerprint problems. A
native of India, Grover's fingertips have very fine ridges, and
in the words of the INS, possess "insufficient pattern area."
Another woman received a letter saying her fingerprints had been
"rejected" just a week before her naturalization ceremony. She
submitted her prints nine more times, at a cost of $15 each, only
to get nine further rejections.
"This is not something we take lightly," said INS spokesperson
Irene Mortensen. "We can't just arbitrarily give out citizenship
to just anyone."
