There's a beta of a new product out today, which provides virtual
platforms on a Linux PC, under which other operating systems may be run,
without being aware that they are not executing on bare metal, and with a
negligible performance penalty in most cases.
It's called VMWare, I have no association with the company, and you may
download it at http://www.vmware.com/.
The creators claim it permits you to run the NT, Linux, Windows, and DOS
OS products out of the box as processes under Linux, with complete
virtualization of all system services through the host API. You can
switch between the multiple operating systems with a few keystrokes.
For those for whom Dual Boot is not an acceptable solution, and for whom
software like Bochs, SoftPC, dosemu, and Wine have been a painful and less
than transparent experience, this may be the product for you.
Kudos to VMWare if these folks have really pulled this off.
I'd love to see feedback on the list from anyone who tries it.
