Dear Trader,
Here is a summation of what happened last week in the markets.
Currency jitters affected sentiment during the past week as concern
about the Chinese yuan followed the continuing crisis stemming from
the devaluation of the Brazilian real. The flight to quality kept
the dollar firm and boosted bonds. Among commodities, sugar, cocoa
and cotton sank, along with natural gas, and the CRB index of 17
futures prices closed 0.77 lower at 189.75. Fighting the trend,
hogs and cattle ended the week with sharp rallies. Stocks ended on
the downside as the steam went out of Internet stocks.

Soybean Oil
So, if the market does not violate the 22.50 trendline
support on the monthly chart, I'm still going long. I'm probably a
buyer in the 22.50 to 22.75 area basis March, but I think to be
safe I'm going to buy July or Dec. and use March as a hedge if the
22.50 trend support is violated. If it goes up, it's along term
trade. The planting intentions are probably already discounted and
next week the market should rally again ... anyway that's my guess.
Currencies
JPY going down against USD. I think this is largely due
to the recent announcement about the bad loans held by the banks in
Japan. Bad news always come out on Friday night in Japan so as to
allow the market to digest the shock, if it is a shock at all. The
announced figure is still not telling the whole truth. Nobody in
Japan thinks it is. The whole bad loans amount to a much larger
figure but the authority simply has not got the guts to tell the
whole world. I think the JPY will still stay at the current level
despite all the bad news.
Copper/Silver
Although I agree in general that commodities prices
tend to rise in fall in tandem, silver seemed to detach itself from
gold last year. Since gold’s runoff from $400, and its lost
hedgeing value against inflation, the two have acted independently
of one another. Although there is not enough history at this point
to support my theory, I would not substitute one metal for the
other. Because of silver’s long-term supply/demand fundamentals,
and its commercial value I think it is the clear frontrunner in the
metals. Any buy below $5 should be taken. p.s. I’m long Dec 99 @
$4.80.
Coffee Options
The recovery is no doubt gonna happen. Whether it
happens in time for the March is doubtful at this point, at least
to any extreme.This will be a good opportunity to enter may and
july contracts, and March will recover somewhat, but don't count on
a lot of upward momentum. If you still have your March options,
next week will be a better week. However, the option value is at
risk here.
