This has all been rehashed many, many times.
One of the main reasons for not restricting the list to those who are
subscribed is to allow remailed messages (or other non-identifying modes,
such as Hotmail, Port 25 hacks, Yahoo, etc.).
Ironic, given the "mixmaster@remail.obscura.com" usage here.
And of course anyone is free to either start their own list, or to even
take the Cypherpunks list(s) and then filter it or moderate it as they see
fit. There have been several such moderated or digestified versions. You,
whomever you are, are free to create a sublist or derivative list which
bounces remailed messages, whatever.
