Hi all,

I just received a CD with the latest Sun compilers and integrated
development environment (Sun Workshop). The release notes state that
"for proper operation, install the following OS patches...". These
have README files that describe in detail what each is for, but it
isn't easy to get a sense of how major the problems are by reading
them, at least for me (I have copies if anyone wants to look them
over). Perhaps those of you on the team with Solaris systems
programming experience can help figure this out.

It happens that we have been getting a significant push from the faculty for
better compilers and programming tools, and it would be very nice if we
could have the patches in for Fall classes, if possible. I realize that the
timing is really bad but of course can't do anything about it. The compilers
may work acceptably even without the patches but I can't be sure without
having them installed and having people test them for a while.

Bill did a quick check on his office machine (running 8.0K) and said that
none are presently installed.

Anyway, here's the list:

ID OS version Topic
101242-11 2.4,2.5,2.5.1 libC shared library fixes
102049-04 2.4 linker fixes
102224-06 2.4 libthread fixes
103285-03 2.5 distributed make patches
103242-04 2.5 linker patch
103606-02 2.5.1 libld.so.2 patch
103810-01 2.5.1 make patch
103164-02 2.5 libthread.so.1 fixes

I suspect that the first patch is the most important one.

                                             Alex
