This is mail the f_l's got from a professor. There was also
a recent bug report, probably about a related problem.

1) sympton
AutoCAD crashes when optional menus and dialog boxes are loaded and
used. These menus include the ones AutoCAD supplies (such as vpoint
graphic menu) and the ones my students and I are making in the
class using AutoLISP.
2) solution
When AutoCAD R13 starts up on Athena SGI, it always gives a warning
saying "Backing store must be turned on." We did not care about
this for a long time after you got us R13 on SGI.
I turned on the backing store using the following process described
in the manual and this seems to eliminate the problem described
above.
A. Become root locally
B. chmod 664 /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers
C. jot /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers
and change the line there by removing -bs option so that it
looks like
:0 secure /usr/bin/X11/X -nobitscale -c -pseudomap 4sight -solidroot sgilightblue -cursorFG red -cursorBG white
D. chmod 664 /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config
E. jot /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-config
change the line below from Falso to True
DisplayManager._0.terminateServer: True
3) question
I have rebooted the machine (m4-035-5) after this to see if this
change is reversed, but the change stayed there.
Is it possible for you to change all the SGI's setting like this
from your side? Or if it is not possible, is it OK to have my TA's
set the machines configured as above by going to each machines
around here (ones in the library, 4-035, architecture studios, and
some others) that we use for my classes?
