Followup:

achernya very kindly went to a cluster and tested through this path. We captured his print job from a cups spool, and confirmed that it's all broken inside. His 20 page job whips through pages like this:

%%Page: 17 17
%%BeginPageSetup
%%PageMedia: Letter
%%PageBoundingBox: 0 0 612 792
%%EndPageSetup
q 0 0 612 792 rectclip q
1 g
0 0 612 792 rectfill
Q Q
showpage
%%Page: 18 18
%%BeginPageSetup
%%PageMedia: Letter
%%PageBoundingBox: 0 0 612 792
%%EndPageSetup
q 0 0 612 792 rectclip q
1 g
0 0 612 792 rectfill
Q Q
showpage

and there's a showpage for every page, but no actual content.

He also confirmed that using evince works. I have a mitigation suggestion for customer consumption here:

  https://kb.mit.edu/confluence/display/istcontrib/Firefox+29+Printing+Workaround

and I've posted it to 3down and hd-notify.
