Dear Mr. Reed:

I received this and your preceding e-mail but I am not sure as to what
we need to do.

We have Athena Workstation cfd4 (a HP computer). On this we have,
amongst other things, the code Simsuper, which we use for educational
purposes and which uses Athena libraries. We also continuously
improve and modify the code. I am very concerned that any changes
will make this code non-workable and non-updatable. So I need your
honest and complete advice as to what to do.

Thank you very much.

Herbert Einstein

Good afternoon,

The Debathena Lucid public release is currently scheduled for the
night of Thursday August 26. As this release is the first automatic
release upgrade for Debathena workstations, please read the following
information carefully.

Only workstations with the "debathena-cluster" metapackage will
automatically upgrade to lucid. If you're not sure which metapackage
your workstation is running, you can use the "machtype -L" command to
view this information. If you are not currently at your workstation,
you can query it using athinfo: "athinfo <hostname> version"

As the upgrade process is designed for "debathena-cluster" machines,
it *completely wipes the hard drive*. Under normal circumstances,
"debathena-cluster" machines should not have any local data storage or
custom configurations. They should also not be installed in dual-boot
configurations.

If you believe you have taken action to force a "debathena-cluster"
machine to store local data, you should immediately copy that data
elsewhere (such as into a location in AFS, or to an external USB
storage device). If that is not possible, you may try to downgrade to
debathena-workstation following the instructions at http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/HoZ2

Users of metapackages other than "debathena-cluster" should follow the
normal Ubuntu upgrade process[1] if they wish to upgrade to Ubuntu
10.04 ("Lucid").

Sincerely,

Jonathan Reed
