I had a funny feeling I was going to get in trouble with this one...
You're right, this item was put on the menu rather quickly, partially
as a favor to an I/S staff member. The only way we'll do it is if
everyone agrees very soon that it is an okay thing to do; I'm not
trying to force it into the release.
The arguments in favor of making the change are:
* It would allow foreign languages and others (Edgerton Center) utilize
the sound capability of the DECstation.
* The Suns have had sound capability for a year now, and while there have
been a few incidents in the public clusters, to the best of my knowledge,
they have been relatively few.
* If we wanted, we could set it up so that the sound was not sent to the
speaker, but only to an output port. This would solve the public cluster
problem, but is not a recommended solution.
* There is no work involved in development or delivery outside of Craig's
time and effort.
The arguments against the change are:
* This would effectively double the number of machines in public clusters
with sound capability, possibly increasing the problem.
* We do not currently have a plan to deal with the problem if it becomes
a major one. (Note that this applies to the situation even if we don't
add sound to the DECstation.)
* Craig needs to find the time to do the work.
Does this help clarify things? Let me re-iterate that because this is a last
minute request, if even one person has a problem, we won't include it in
release 7.7.
Thanks again,
Dot
