My memory is getting dim on this, but I think there used to be a distinction
between "friendly test" and "staff test" (and maybe even "field test").

Yes, as I recall there were 3 test phases (alpha, beta (friendly),
staff). Teh alpha phase contained >10 machines all controled by
rel-eng; you probably wabt to forget about this phase. The beta phase
was generally for staff members that were willing/able to report any
bugs they encountered in the new release. The staff test phase was
for staff, SIPB, and interested private clusters. It was generally
requested taht all staff members who do not have a reason to need
there machine to be stable (ie., it's running a service or something)
use the staff test. (Obiviously, excepting the staff members using
beta-test). I believe staff included members of DCNS ACS and CSS.
