Solaris 8.0 Delayed: Transarc Strikes Again

We were planning to release 8.0 to field for Solaris tonight, but we
have found another occurrence of the AFS performance problem. (This is
very likely the same problem reported recently by jhawk. He also
reported yesterday that rebooting the machine in question caused the
problem to disappear, which was a bad sign.)

Indications are that machines that have been up for a while and used
by several users over that time will get into a state where AFS ceases
to cache inode information. Greg has observed an 8.0 machine in the
watchmaker zone to definitely be in this state. Furthermore, Jonathon
has found a thread on the info-afs mailing list (the thread having
begun 7/3) from a site apparently describing the same problem, only
running Solaris 2.5.

We are currently investigating this bug, but consider this to be a
real problem. We will no doubt be contacting Transarc shortly; I
believe we should declare 8.0 delayed pending further investigation.
Regardless, it isn't going to field this evening.

Craig
