If I assume that by "time ./gmake" you mean "time gmake" and if I assume
you mean I should build tcpdump not libpcap (since the latter builds in
under two minutes.)

These are the results I get:

time ./configure
29.63u 54.35s 2:19.98 59.9%
hanta-yo% time gmake
214.40u 104.18s 6:47.32 78.2%

Please forgive my configuration:

A SPARC Classic with 24 meg instead of 32 meg running Netscape and
Andrew messages during the build too.

So I guess it would take a little longer than the 5 minutes to build
than your machine which wasn't running zwgc.

But I CERTAINLY don't consume an hour building this.

MR HAWKINSON!

I WILL THANK YOU TO BE very clear IN FUTURE WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO DROP IN
AT THE LAST MINUTE WITH UNSUBSTANTIATED AND UNREPRODUCABLE PROBLEMS WITH
MY RELEASE.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP, BUT PLEASE DO SO IN A TIMELY AND WELL
ORGANIZED MANNER FROM NOW ON.

Bottom line:

There is no performance problem in 8.0 relative to 7.7.
The release delivery people take performance problems very seriously.
There should be no delay in sending the release out.

You may consider this the OFFICIAL position of the Deliver Athena Team.
