Hi all,

This has been on my mind for some time- I'm writing now partly in response
to recent news from Bill that RedHat seems to be actively maintaining RHEL4
with regular updates.

I'm finding more and more that it's difficult and in some cases
impossible to build Athena applications from source because our
libraries are so old, particularly glibc and all the gnome stuff but
also others. In some cases I've had to recompile newer versions of
libraries already in the release and then have to deal with missing
symbol errors from links to the wrong version...

I don't know if current RHEL4 releases update system libraries to current
releases but if they do and there is any chance we could get this in an
Athena patch release before Athena 10 is out it would be very helpful.

If this is too major an undertaking as an interim project I can
understand and will have to make do..

                                       Alex
