Many on these lists have questioned the wisdom of my complaining to
Red Hat about the gap between Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the needs
of the MIT desktop user.
Over time, it has been extremely frustrating, and it really seemed
like Red Hat was imovably wedded to a model antagonistic to our use.

Yet, with the announcement of the RHEL 5.2 beta, it seems as if Red
Hat has taken the needs I articulated to heart! If everything in
RHEL 5.2 makes it into the actual update release we will have:

Power Management for Laptops.
A re-based Desktop based on OpenOffice 2.3, and Firefox 3.
The Open Source Radeon Driver for the chips we use in our Dells.

I've done a test install, and it didn't yet blow up on me. I'm
cautiously optimistic.
