Later tonight, a /usr/athena/bin/emacs19 will show up in the system
packs in the Athena cell. This is emacs 19.30, and is what we plan to
make the default version of emacs in the summer.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON USERS: People who run "add emacs19" and "emacs19"
will get /usr/athena/bin/emacs19 instead of
/mit/emacs19/$bindir/emacs19. Since there are some differences
between emacs 19.28 and emacs 19.30, they may have questions or
complaints. If they want to continue using emacs19 from the emacs19
locker, they should use "add -f emacs19" instead of "add emacs19".

We are deploying a /usr/athena/bin/emacs19 so that users can get used
to emacs 19.30 before it becomes the default. In about one week, the
default emacs 18 startup banner will get the following additional
text (or something resembling it a lot):

	* * * * * IMPORTANT NOTICE * * * * *

This summer, the default emacs on Athena will be upgraded to version
19.30, which is significantly different from the current version. The
main reason for this change is that emacs 19 is significantly easier
to learn how to use than emacs 18. If you want to try out and adjust
to emacs 19 before the upgrade, you can run "emacs19" instead of
"emacs". If you have questions about emacs 19, you can ask them
through the On-Line Consultant system ("olc").

(SGIs already use emacs 19.28 as the default, which is similar to, but
not quite the same as, emacs 19.30. You can run "emacs19" on an SGI
	to get emacs 19.30.)

This may result in some questions about emacs 19. We are waiting a
week to deploy the banner to give consultants some time to get used to
emacs 19.30 themselves. Consultants should feel free to ask me
questions if they need to. I am maintaining a list of changes likely
to bite users in /mit/ghudson/dev/emacs19-changes.
