I just finished a conference call with HP regarding their plans for
Linux support on laptops.
I now have names of engineering and marketing contacts who are very
interested in working with me to "connect the dots" for Linux-capable
laptop solutions that dovetail into our plans for official Freshmen
Laptop offerings.
Also in the mix is an agreement to explore contingencies with shifting
to SuSE Linux if Red Hat's pricing model creates a problem.
The next planned step is to get an HP NC8000c to my shop for
qualification testing with Red Hat 9.
There will be ongoing conversations at the engineering level to make
the best fit of all the various conflicting hardware and software
requirements, to maximize the ease with which Athena can deploy on the
HP machine, and the ease with which mommy and daddy can buy Joe Random
Freshman his MIT-recommended laptop.
Kathleen: Heads up! You and Bill Tait will be working together to
make sure that we've got the right set of options for Linux capable
configurations as a GOOD DEAL for purchase through GovConnection. I
have engineering and marketing contacts now to make sure Bill Tait
offers MIT "The Right Thing (tm)". There are subtle issues here where
identically priced and performing systems are either Windows only or
Linux capable. My goal is to make this EASY for you. But we DO have
to remember to collaborate before the configs are carved in stone and
published.
